Crist camp releases favorable poll

Email Print PDF

Just read Chris Cillizza’s “The Fix” blog where he reveals that the Charlie Crist campaign has released an internal poll conducted by Keith Frederick of Frederick Polls showing him one point in front of Marco Rubio in their quest to be the next U.S. Senator from Florida. The poll showed Crist garnering 35% of the vote; Rubio with 34%; and Congressman Kendrick Meek coming in with 17%. In other words, a virtual tie between Crist and Rubio.Charlie Crist

The poll revealed interesting tendencies among the voters:

-- Crist with 37% and Meek also with 37% split the Democratic vote;

--Rubio dominates the Republican vote with a hefty 66%, but Crist grabs 21% of the Republican vote;

-- Independent and No Party voters go with Crist by a 55% to 24% for Rubio.

-- As for popularity in the race, interestingly, Crist was, by far, the most popular of the three men running for the senate seat. Crist had a 60% positive perception and a 34% negative; Rubio came in with 45% positive and 30% negative (but, had NO popularity outside the republican ranks); and Meek rated 38% positive and 30% negative.

As we near election day, this race should continue to be close. It will also probably be the most watched senatorial race in the country.

Who will win this? Your guess is as good as mine.

But I think the reason for Crist releasing the poll are the positives look good in his direction. He polls one point ahead; he is the most popular; and at this time it appears that Meek is NOT running away with the Democratic vote. Finally, and most importantly, among independent voters Crist runs away with it.

We’ll keep watching and reporting…

Good news for Sink – Chiles to drop out

Email Print PDF

I keep reading that Bud Chiles, son of former Florida governor and U.S. Senator Lawton Chiles (who by defeated Jeb Bush in his first quest for governor of Florida during the decade of the 90s) will quit his run for governor as an Independent candidate. Chiles is expected to make his announcement on Thursday.

If true, it is probably very good news for Democrat Alex Sink. Chiles, as son of a former very popular democrat, would have probably pulled votes away from Sink.

Alex Sink is in an interesting battle with political newcomer Rick Scott, who defeated Bill McCollum (who was backed by Jeb Bush and others), in a hotly contested primary race. Scott spent about $50 million of his own money to assure his victory.

Losing hold of our democracy?

Email Print PDF

The Miami Herald’s Beth Reinhard last week wrote a column titled  “Time to assess primary’s real winners, losers.” She gives an objective opinion of who were the winners and losers in last week’s primary races for governor, U.S. Senate, and other important political races in Florida.

There was one area where I must disagree with her. And in fact, she seems to state one thing and then says another in a following paragraph. She calls South Florida a loser because “Turnout was about 17 percent in Miami-Dade, under 15 percent in Broward and just over 16 percent in Palm Beach, among the worst showings in the state. Pathetic.”

Then two paragraphs down in the same column she says that democracy is a winner because “Primaries make candidates better.” Yes they do. They usually sharpen the candidate’s message, etc., I would add.

But I would ask Ms. Reinhard, who I don’t know and consider a good political reporter, how can democracy be winning when turnout in Miami during important elections – and these recent primaries were just that – yields a “high” of 17 percent in Miami-Dade County? Considering the thousands of eligible who are NOT registered, we’re basically saying that less than 10% of the eligible electorate decides who will lead us going forward.

As I asked in a recent column, “as voters, are we losing our hold on a democracy that seems headed to a less participatory system controlled by the power of money?”

Blog site predicts Crespo for Marti

Email Print PDF

According to the Rui Ferreira blog, Herejias y Caipirinhas, Radio and TV Marti director Pedro Roig was given the boot. But you know how these things are handled sometimes, “Buddy, you have a choice, you call it quits (so you look good to the public) or we will fire you…” Roig, no dummy, thanked the administration and said he was leaving.Paul Crespo

Another interesting prediction from Ferreira (who, by the way, advised in his website that Roig would be departing two weeks before he did) is that Roig’s successor at Radio and TV Marti has already been chosen. He uses word play to state that the person has curly hair.Curly translated to Spanish is Crespo. In other words, the person might be Paul Crespo, who recently lost the primary race for congress in district 25 against our favorite liar, David Rivera. Crespo, by the way, was not much of a choice against Rivera. But that’s another story for another day.

So if Crespo is the successor… I don’t see much improvement from Roig to Crespo. Then again, what are we doing still spending $50 million a year on radio and TV stations nobody sees or hears? The Martis have always been a political giveaway – a way to create jobs to friends and political allies in Miami. What I still don’t get is why Obama keeps it financed when a great deal of the money goes to derail his presidency…

Scott and Meek’s victories signal bad things to come in November

Email Print PDF

Primary election night results have not brought good news for Democrats statewide, I believe. The stunning republican victory by former health care executive Rick Scott over Florida’s attorney general and former member of Congress Bill McCollum does not, in my opinion, favor Democrat Alex Sink, a former banking executive and currently Florida’s chief financial officer.Rick Scott

On another front, Kendrick Meek’s resounding victory over billionaire Jeff Greene puts Democrats in a pickle. Looking forward to November’s general election, polls are telling us Meek cannot win the race for U.S. Senate. But, as the Democratic Party candidate he will subtract votes, many believe, from recently turned Independent Charlie Crist, Florida’s current governor. Many Dems were looking at Crist as a best-case scenario in a race against upstart Tea Party favorite and republican nominee Marco Rubio. Meek’s win gives Rubio a very credible shot at winning in November.

As for Sink and Scott… A McCollum win would have made life easier for Sink going forward. McCollum is a dull campaigner – something Sink is also blamed for. And Scott is expected to spend all the money he needs to saturate the airwaves with his message. Scott, a multimillionaire, is expected to have spent more than $50 million of his own money when all is said and done.

Before tonight, polls showed that Sink would have had an easier time against McCollum. With the upstart and victorious Scott a relative unknown, but with money to burn, all bets are off in the race for Florida governor.

In both cases, and in my opinion, the worst that could have happened for Florida – did.

Latest David Rivera question: Did he almost marry the woman he never met and beat up?

Email Print PDF

Things seem to be getting worse for David Rivera. Miami’s state rep, who seems to want to lie his way to the District 25 Congressional seat abandoned by Mario Diaz-Balart, is mired in major Pinocchio-like problems. Over the past few months Rivera has been outed as a chronic liar. The problem is that the lies continue to mount, to the point, his growing nose has become so heavy he is falling over himself avoiding questions he seems to trip over – a standard NOT TRUE, he claims, in spite of evidence of truth against his continuing string of lies.

The latest dart which appeared yesterday in former Nuevo Herald reporter Rui Ferreira’s blog, Herejias y Caipirhinas, is that Rivera was close to marrying the woman he is being accused of beating up in the 1990s. A woman, by the way, who David says he’s never met! And to make matters juicier… the woman is a granddaughter of the only Cuban president ever named by Fidel Castro – a man by the last name of Dorticos, just like the woman Rivera NEVER beat up…

Still think David Rivera is NOT a liar?

Email Print PDF

There has been something very positive about this election season – at least here in Miami. Any person who still has doubts whether State Rep. David Rivera is a liar, well, there is still some land left in the Everglades (last time I checked there were still alligators there and the Latin Builders hadn’t bought the whole damn thing up and poured concrete on it) I’d like to offer you. Though, these days, there are developers who have bought land in the Everglades, poured cement on it, gone to the county and paid off commissioners, changed the zoning on our endangered South Florida water source and built cardboard houses on top of dead crocs, birds and who knows what other species of animal they’ve killed, and become rich while destroying one of our most precious natural South Florida resources.David Rivera

For starters, Rivera has denied knowing one of his best friends. I had lunch with that friend of his, Ariel Pereda last year. He’s a good enough fellow. The problem: he does (legitimate) business with Cuba. Rivera, the most anti of the anti Cubans, suddenly (supposedly) turned on a friend for whom he served as best man at his wedding. Didn’t even know the guy, he told the media. Yeah, sure David… And why’d you keep him (Ariel) out of those nasty unconstitutional laws that hurt most everyone in Florida – except your buddy, of course?

Recently we’ve also heard of the truck he ran into in 2002, apparently on purpose, because it was carrying campaign literature that might be damaging to his first campaign for the State House. Turns out it was late in the campaign and he had hoped that by derailing (did he ever think that he might kill the driver on the Palmetto Highway?) the truck, it (the political mail piece it was carrying) might not get to the Post Office on time.

The political mail piece, by the way, had to do with accusations of domestic violence against an ex-girlfriend (or the daughter of a friend of his) he never met before. Sure David, you never met the girl. That’s right. Just like you don’t know Ariel Pereda…?

They are accusations that have again surfaced in David’s most recent republican primary campaign to represent Republicans in the November election for the Mario Diaz-Balart-vacated District 25 congressional seat.

I’ll throw one more into the David Rivera book of knowledge. Did you know that a young David, South Florida’s uber republican, in 1992, met with candidate Bill Clinton in the successful attempt to dethrone George H.W. Bush. At the time, Rivera was working for Radio and TV Marti (to be honest, I’m not sure if TV Marti was already around).

David, David, when will you be honest with us. Tell us the truth. What really happened with that girl you allegedly beat the crap out of? Might it be more than meets the eye? Are you hiding something in the closet you refuse to tell us about?

Hmmmm!

David Rivera: Trying to lie his way to DC

Email Print PDF

David Rivera is still trying to lie his way to the top. This guy may soon overtake Dorrin Rolle in my book as the sleaziest politician in Miami. He denies a friend (because he does business with Cuba); denies he was being foreclosed on (which he was on a Tallahassee home he co-owned with fellow gunslinger and member of the Double R team Marco Rubio; and now this. Check out the video and then if you live in Congressional District 25, vote at your own risk:
